Okay,we start with an image that looks like this. I chose this file because it is from an improperly exposed original Nikon RAW file,and this believe it or not,was about as good a starting point as I could get. Had the original been shot in JPEG mode, getting even this acceptable a file would have been totally impossible. Originally,this shot was WAYYY underexposed,and the highlights are burned out. I had to doctor them a lot,and the shadows,well,they were starting to show some noise. I had to do four or five RAW-to-16 bit conversions just to get this file.
