This area is probably best known for the Blue John Mines and caverns, and the fact that the main road westwards out of here the A625, was closed in the 1970's after a prolonged battle with the "Shimmering" hillside of Mam Tor. The road was patched many , many times to try and keep it open but eventually man had to give in and let is slide further down the hillside .
