About 100' south of the trailhead, the Cholla Trail's relentless climb starts in earnest. Some of the step risers are over 18-inches in height. Normal risers are about 8-inches. At the end of the stepped area, the trail continues with a series of steep rocky switchbacks for about a quarter of the way to the summit.
