Uglich

Uglich is one of the the oldest towns in Russia, founded in the year of 937. The most famous landmark is the Church of St Dmitry on the Blood (Photo 01 - 03), built in 1690 at the spot where Prince Ivan's son Dmitry was murdered at the age of ten, hence the colour of red.

After the short tour of the couple of churches built right by the river, most of the tourists went picking souvenirs before returning to the ship. I walked 2 blocks further and found 3 more churches on the other side of the street. The one in #12 is almost like a ruin. Hardly anyone stopped and pointed the camera at it. But to me, it was very interesting and characteristic. In fact, many historical buildings in this town and the outskirts are still being restored after 1952 because Stalin's decision to create the Uglich Reservoir led to severe flooding and caused heavy damage.
