The exhibition, themed "Journey to the Afterworld," features massive granite sarcophagi from ancient Egypt alongside others from the Roman and Byzantine eras.
The collection includes stone sarcophagi from various periods of Egyptian history, such as the New Kingdom and Late Period.
The word sarcophagi is the plural form of sarcophagus, meaning the very special kind of coffins. A lot of them were made of stone, traditionally decorated with sculptures, paintings, and inscriptions.
In ancient Egypt, it served as a protective outer vault to protect the mummy and ensure safe passage into the afterlife.
They were incredibly expensive and reserved for pharaohs, nobility, and the wealthy.
