24_Friedrich Schiller.jpg

As this Concert Hall (Konzerthaus Berlin) was originally the Royal Theatre, it explains why the monument is a statue of a poet, playwright and philosopher Friedrich Schiller, and not a composer.
Executed by the prominent 19th-century sculptor Reinhold Begas, the neo-baroque monument was unveiled in 1871 and features Schiller standing atop a pedestal.
Seated at the base are four female allegorical figures that represent Lyric/ Poetry, Drama, Philosophy and History.
His 1785 poem "Ode to Joy" An die Freude is world-famous for being set to music by Ludwig van Beethoven in the choral finale of his Ninth Symphony.
An exquisite bond is now established between a poet and a concert hall.

Fabulous capture of the luminous white monument to Friedrich Schiller standing in splendid contrast against the warm stone façade of the Konzerthaus Berlin. So wonderful to observe Schiller rising above the four graceful allegorical figures representing Poetry, Drama, Philosophy and History — the great disciplines that defined his remarkable life and legacy. So, before this grand concert hall, we see poetry and music beautifully united — an exquisite and enduring bond between the words of a poet and the voice of a composer....wonderful composition....V
