I never imagined I would one day walk on the "Death Strip"—that *No Man's Land*.
The Berlin Wall actually consisted of two parallel walls.
Those attempting to flee East Berlin—even if they managed to cross the inner wall (now the East Side Gallery)—still had to traverse this *No Man's Land* and scale the outer wall.
The outside wall marked the border with West Berlin, the free world.
Between these two walls lay watchtowers, searchlights, anti-personnel mines, "Stalin's lawn" (beds of razor-sharp iron spikes concealed beneath the sand), and many other unsuspected traps.
