Monumento a Hernando de Magallanes, is a bronze tribute to the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, located in the Plaza de Armas in the heart of Punta Arenas, Chile.
It was erected in 1920 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Magellan's historic voyage through the strait that now bears his name.
At the pinnacle of the 10-meter composition, Magellan stands on a cannon carriage looking out toward the sea.
A mermaid with two caudal fins on the base symbolizes the connection of the two oceans (Atlantic and Pacific) through the Strait of Magellan.
One figure holds both the Spanish and Chilean coats of arms.
The bronze monument is the work of Chilean sculptor Guillermo Córdova
