The New Schleissheim Palace was never used as a primary residence because its patron, Elector Max Emanuel, died in 1726 just as construction finished.
Besides, the War of the Spanish Succession had already ruined his finances and imperial ambitions.
His successor, Karl Albrecht, preferred Nymphenburg Palace, leaving the massive, unfinished baroque complex as an overlooked, rarely used summer retreat.
(The War of the Spanish Succession, 1701–1714. The Spanish king had died, leaving no children, which resulted in succession crisis.
The war primarily involved German states because Austria fought to prevent a French Bourbon from taking the Spanish throne.
Bavaria allied with France, while Prussia and others backed Austria.)
