36_Rosenborg Castle.jpg

Rosenborg Castle was the site for Danish coronations (anointings) using the special Coronation Chair for nearly two centuries, from Christian V in 1671, until King Christian VIII in 1840,
After 1849 (when the constitution was adopted), coronations ceased as Denmark became a constitutional monarchy, making these ceremonies historical artifacts.
The formal coronation was replaced by a Royal Proclamation, a public announcement by the Prime Minister when there's a new monarch.
The most recent proclamation was held on January 14, 2024. King Frederik X and Queen Mary had a proclamation ceremony on the balcony of Christiansborg Palace, instead of Rosenborg Castle.
The Prime Minister announced a new king after Queen Margrethe II's abdication. Her elder son took the throne.
