I don't have a story about Rhineland, but back in Normandy Dad and a buddy were on guard duty one night in a three foot ditch around a farm field. The night was pitch dark, but they could hear lots of explosions and gunfire, and they were pretty scared. In the morning Dad went exploring, but soon came running back. He found an unexploded 500 pound bomb about 100 feet from where they spent the night.
