Hi Mike Lundy,
I know about the sound you're talking about. WHB in Kansas City (another Storz station) also had this on overnights, but it was probably a Seeburg jukebox unit that had been modified for broadcast. At least that's what it was in Kansas City.

One more thing. Don't you love the "professional" tape recorder in the upper right. (However, come to think of it, for a while even during the big Storz years, overnights were done from the xmtr using one of those cheap RCA 45 CHANGERS. You cloud hear the next record drop and track in. Only time you didn't hear that was when they ran taped promos, etc. Presume the engineer had t grab the record to keep it from playing during the promo or jingle.

As a teenager we used to love to go down to the Builders Exchange Building (just two doors away from WCCO) and hike up to the second floor to watch the WDGY jocks. They played the 45s. Engineers on the other side of the glass did everything else.

Can't believe the photo of the automation era in 1962, Presume this was out at the transmitter when they went on the cheap. And cheap it was. Look at that old six pot RCA board, with "precedence" of 5 over 6. Used it at my first Top 40. It was a nightmare. And they were stil using the Altec/Western Electric 639? What the heck happened (KDWB? My family had moved to Los Angeles by then.)

I remember always listening to WDGY & KDWB on my handheld Transister radio in the mid 6o's and there are a lotta songs in those days that I have never heard since. Sometimes these songs were big for a few months and played several times a day and the artists may not have been heard from since. The station 107.9 has changed and even when they concentrated on "the oldies", still missed songs that are still in my mind and would love to hear again.
I would love to pick up a CD on a recorded typical day in lets say, 1967 even including the commercials. Or find a way to dig past the "Supremes and CCR" to find songs such as "Yellow Baloon" etc. Please call me: Dave at 651-306-0258 thank you
