Bode's Nebula

Sedro-Woolley, Wa.

NGC3031 / M81 the galaxy on the right is about 12 million light years away in the constillation Ursa Major; of which the big dipper is a part.
It was named after its discoverer Johann Elert Bode in who discovered it in 1774. This was long befor the concept of galaxys.
NGC3034 / M82 / Cigar Galaxy is the left galaxy in the photo. It is also about 12 million light years away.
