The 31 designation is the year of the model (1931), Karabiner being Carbine in English. The Swiss army used this Rifle from 1931 to 1957. It has a reputation for being both very durable and accurate. It uses 7.5 X 55mm ammunition designated Gewehrpatrone 11 (GP 11) loaded into five round detachable magazines
