SB1517w.jpg

Here, we look past a surprisingly modest apartment block from the 1970s (which has somehow
survived) toward Cockatoo Island which lies pretty much at the junction of The Lane Cove and
Parramatta Rivers and, at 44 acres, is the largest island in Sydney Harbour. Since 2010 it has been
a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Between 1857 and 1991 it operated as a naval shipyard. The first of its two dry docks was built by
convicts and listed on the National Heritage List. Cockatoo Island Dockyard was especially vital
for its operations during World War Two.

Nice view across the bay to the island! Did it earn its name because it was populated with Cockatoos?
