We follow Pellisier Road which runs adjacent to Putney Park until we arrive at the terminal for the
Mortlake Vehicular Ferry. The "Putney Punt" as it is more commonly described, has been operating
here since 1925. The two present ferry vessels themselves seem relatively youthful, dating perhaps
from the 1980s and are well maintained. Nonetheless this form of transport is quaint at best and
laughably inefficient at worst. High volume bridges are not far away to both the east AND west and
we are left wondering why this service (one of the last in New South Wales) still runs.
Speaking personally I am looking forward to the trip across the river. Efficiency be damned. This
looks like fun. Were we to stay on the northern bank of the river, we would be unable to travel
next to the water consistently. On the southern bank, we will have much better access to the river
as we walk.
