As we approach the Ryde Bridge, we see very clearly two large constructions which (when I was young)
used to house gigantic counter-weights which were utilised as part of a bridge opening mechanism
evidently enabling the passage of tall masted vessels. About 30 years ago the original opening bridge
was augmented by a matching one to double the road traffic capacity. That one was never intended
to open.
