I think this is an interesting domestic architecture find. I have previously mentioned the role
of double and triple fronted brick veneer cottages in the 1960s and early 1970s. It is a view, shared
by many people, that such dwellings represented a nice sensible choice for young families starting
out who needed something basic and inexpensive. While ever they remained three bedroom, one living
area cottages, they made sense, it seemed. As that era wore on into the late 1970s however, many
more interesting designs and styles became available to the Australian consumer, many of which made
better, more interesting choices once one decided to go larger with extra bedrooms, bathrooms and
living spaces. Strangely, many people just made the basic cottage larger, whereupon the severe
limitations in architectural style embodied in such houses became painfully apparent. To my mind
this is an example. It was probably built in the early 1980s, once texture brick had lost favour. It
was just a basic cottage simply blown out a bit. It was no doubt practical from the mere space
per dollar viewpoint but it was also a frightful bore, surely.
