These old locomotives are sometimes 70 or 80 years old. The non-operating ones in the big museum
shed are often far older. The elderly boiler systems can no longer accept the pressure that they once
might have. So, on these operational outings, they usually double head the locomotives to make
the going less stressful for the old machines. Here, loco 3265 is teamed with loco 2705 for the
service to Boxton. The engine driver looks back for the Thirlmere station master's green flag,
signalling departure.

How wonderful for a real engineer to be in the photo.
