Along the coast walkway we occasionally come across locality information boards with accompanying
beach theme sculptures. This one depicts life savers in a traditional surf rescue boat. These days
most actual rescues are carried out in brilliant, purpose-built rubber dinghies with powerful outboard
motors. Oar powered timber boats like these are used for surf carnival competition. For those who
don't realise, "Life Savers" are volunteers who belong to organised "Surf Life Saving Clubs" and who patrol
the beaches on weekends. "Life Guards", who mainly work during the week, are employed by local government.
