Portland is a naturally pretty location and would once have been a great place to live. When the
huge cement manufacturing plant closed down some years ago, it crippled the town. Massive
unemployment prevents businesses from remaining viable for long. Most retail premises are closed
and boarded up, while here and there, display windows are smashed. It is all very depressing to behold.
