Lens hoods have a way of taking light which seems to make them look important ... if you are a shutterbug like me.
(for the benefit of a dear friend - the camera was hand held, using a torch for illumination and a desklamp for fill)

Lens hoods are beautiful things, in the same class as a fine wine, or a gem stone, a great sunset!! You have created a very interesting composition, very Cubist, perfectly balanced and full of interest. Really fine, David!! It is a pleasure to the eye. BV
