Beautiful information panels provide a detailed history of the site which, in early days, had been
occupied by agricultural warehouses, a whaling station, a coaling depot and a distillery. BP had
taken over the location in 1922 but by 1936 it had been sub-leased to the Commonwealth Oil Refinery.
In 1958, control reverted to BP but in 1993 all operations ceased. The fuel tanks were demolished
by 1997 and the land became a public reserve.
