We found the remains of a few White-tailed deer, Odocoileus virginianus, there are so many of these deer in the forest that they are overgrazing and causing serious degradation to the environment. The forestry service has actually taken to fencing off large areas of forest and culling the deer with in the fence to give young trees a chance to grow tall enough that the deer can no longer kill them. While I am sure some of the remains we found may have been deer shot by hunters that ran off before dying, I would also bet that even more died from starvation over the winter.
