Par contre sous l’Ancien Régime existait « Le Droit de Bris » permettant aux habitants des côtes de récupérer pour leur propre compte ou celui du seigneur local les marchandises échouées sur le rivage après un naufrage.

This "Black Legend" (see the main page of the gallery) has never been historically proven in fact. On the other hand, under the Ancien Régime there existed 'Le Droit de Bris', which allowed coastal residents to recover goods washed up on the shore after a shipwreck for their own account or that of the local lord.
