Sukhothaï fut la capitale du premier royaume thaïlandais. Elle vit le jour au XIIIéme siècle lorsque les Thais se libérèrent de la suzeraineté d’Ankor Vat.
Elle demeura indépendante jusqu’en 1378, date à laquelle elle passa sous la coupe d’un autre état thaï, Ayutthaya.
À son apogée la ville comptait 180 temples et sa population se serait élevée à 300 000 habitants Elle fait partie de la liste du patrimoine mondial de l’humanité établie par l’Unesco.

Sukhothai was the capital of the first Thai kingdom. It was created in the 13th century when the Thais were liberated from the suzerainty of Ankor Vat.
It remained independent until 1378, when it was subjugated to another Thai state, Ayutthaya.
At its peak, the city had 180 temples and a population of 300,000.
It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage List.
