Quelle harmonie !
The Nativity of Piero della Francesca:
I have always admired the work of the Umbrian painter : purity of lines, softness of colours, humour (The donkey that roars while the minstrel angels play and the choir sings) ; the decrepit building that serves as a background for the nativity; the beautiful landscape to the left with the cliff and the meanders of a river; To the right in the distant, towers of a city; the three men in lively conversation in front of the city, including Joseph seated; the almost Flemish face of Mary, draped in her blue cloak; the moving blue of the sky and the child lying on a piece of cloth on the ground and reaching out to his kneeling mother with his hands clasped in prayer. What harmony!
