Dans la caste des sudras, la plus nombreuse à Bali, les parents n’ont guère le choix pour donner un prénom à leurs enfants:
Qu’il soit garçon ou fille le premier s’appellera Wayang, le second Madé, le troisième Nyoman et le quatrième Ketut. Si un cinquième enfant vient au monde dans certaines regions on l’appellera Putu ou Gede, mais généralement on reprendra le cycle initial et il se prénommera Wayang….
Ainsi on ne s’étonnera pas, si, reconnaissant quelqu’un dans la rue et lui criant « Nyoman ! » pour attirer son attention, vous voyez plusieurs personnes s’arrêter et se tourner vers vous.

In the Sudra caste, the largest in Bali, parents have little choice to give their children a first name:
