Nijo - Jo - 3.

The powerful walls of the Nijo-Jo, the official residence of the Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616). While the Emperor reigned only over his palace, the shoguns, powerful military leaders, reigned all over Japan.
Even today, when we visit the apartments of Ieyasu, the wooden floor «sings» under our feet (the Japanese believe to recognize in this musical noise the song of the nightingale): this is how Ieyasu, who feared an assassination against him, was alerted in his sleep to any unexpected approach…

the powerful are often the most fearful...the graphic strength here underscores the defensive mindset of the shogun..
