Pol Aurelien est considéré comme l’un des sept saints fondateurs de la Bretagne. C’est donc un saint majeur du Christianisme Celtique. Il était né vers 480 au Pays de Galles dans une famille aristocratique qui avait combattu les Saxons. Devenu prêtre il enseignait les Evangiles à la cour du roi Mark lorsqu’une vision lui commanda d’aller prêcher en Armorique.
En 517 il débarqua à l’Ile d’Ouessant où il fonda un monastère.
Il gagna ensuite le continent où il acquis une grande réputation en chassant les dragons, les vouivres (serpent ailé) et les coquatrix (animal fabuleux à tête de coq à ailes de chauve-souris et au corps de serpent).
Sa renommée était telle qu’il devint évêque de Saint Pol de Léon.


Paul Aurelien is considered one of the seven founding saints of Brittany. He is therefore a major saint of Celtic Christianity. He was born around 480 in Wales into an aristocratic family that had fought the Saxons. He became a priest and taught the Gospels at the court of King Mark when a vision ordered him to preach in Armorica.
In 517 he landed on the island of Ouessant where he founded a monastery.
He then reached the continent where he gained a great reputation by chasing dragons, «  vouivres » (winged snake) and « coquatrix » (fabulous animal with the head of a rooster, the wings of a bat and the body of a snake).
His fame was such that he became bishop of Saint Pol de Léon in North Brittany.
