Les gardiens classaient les phares en trois catégories :
- Le paradis : lorsqu’ils étaient affectés sur un phare à terre.
- Le purgatoire : quand ils occupaient un phare sur une île.
- L’enfer quand on leur attribuait un phare situé en pleine mer où la relève était difficile et la solitude pesante.
Le phare de la Vieille appartient à cette dernière catégorie.
