Colorful Kimonos (Kukurizaru - 1)

In Higashiyama district on the edge of a steep street that leads to Kyomizu temple there is a small temple that we noticed because of the colourful crowds that surround it. The temple is named Yasaka Koshin-Do. Although it is Buddhist obedience, it is dedicated to a Taoist Warrior, Koshin-San. The warrior is supposed to help the poorest and punish the wicked. According to the Taoist belief, in order for a prayer to be realized, one must “give” one of his desires to Koshin-San.

So the court is always full of young girls dressed in colorful yukatas or kimonos (you may find also some young couples). They come to write their wishes on little lucky balls, called « Kukurizaru », which they then hang on the beams of the temple. There are so many that it forms real garlands of color.
Thus they followed the practice of locking up the wish into the ball… Of course, before you leave you have to sacrifice to the «selfie moment» (non included in the Taoist ritual :). No doubt that the the selfie will remain, But what about the Will ? Will Koshin-San be well-wishing ?
