Un casse-tête...Japonais.

A Japanese Puzzle.

When a westerner walks for the first time in the district of Gion he comes to pass rather quickly women elegantly dressed in a kimono, feet clad in geta, the face painted white and crowned with a black jay wig from which hung chamfered bimbelotteries, and he immediately thinks with delight "Geisha!" or “Maiko »" (Geisha apprentice)!
He is convinced to be in the presence of the reincarnation of one of those sophisticated Japanese beauties painted by Utamaro. He is all the more convinced that Gion is precisely the district where geishas and maikos practice.

Unfortunately, things are more complicated…

The fascination of the geishas on foreigners and non-Geishas Japanese is such that many women want to do a few hours during the experience of makeup and wearing the kimono. These one-day maikos are called Maiko Henshin » (literally « Transformed into Maiko »). They wander the streets or get photographed in specialized studios.

Let’s say that we unfortunately have more chances to meet a Maiko Henshin than a real Maiko...

Great candid of these lovely ladies being the center of attention for a day. This trend is so popular these days in Tokyo and Kyoto, that you'll see even blue eyed, blonde Westerners all dressed and made up as a Geishas. Thank you for sharing the photo.
