La Tour de la Lanterne (The Tower of the Lantern) , situated in the ramparts perspective line, was built in the XVth century and served as lighthouse during storms. It is one of the elements remaining from the medieval fortifications of La Rochelle.
In XVIIIth century it became a prison for a gret number of privateers captured on seas (Englishmen, Scottish, Irish, Dutch, Spaniards...)

a riveting glance...this seems an affluent town....must say though Daniel, it seems a crime to imprison the Irish...rogues, perhaps, but still a special people..
