Western Grebes are so elegant, they almost look like a sculptor designed them with their long slender beaks and necks and that bright red eye. I definitely didn’t want to pass up an opportunity to look for some during our trip to New Mexico so after not seeing any at Bosque del Apache NWR we headed down to Elephant Butte Lake to see if we could find some there. It took a little searching but we eventually did encounter four of them. I thought this shot was rather amusing, definitely worth the effort in my opinion.

Aechmophorus occidentalis
