Having visited the Tarcoles River in Costa Rica many times in the past I have certain expectations about what it will be like when I go there but even though there are similarities from visit to visit there are always some differences that keep things interesting. During our visit earlier this month I was thrilled to see about twenty Double-striped Thick-knees on a beach along the river. In the past I might have seen one or two and on several trips, I didn’t see any so seeing such a flock of them was an unexpected treat! If that wasn’t enough there were a few individuals standing quite close to the water allowing for some detailed close-ups. What a strange and beautiful bird!
