My friend Bill Maroldo almost got a new nickname (the weatherman) on the first day of our recent visit to Costa Rica. We were driving from the airport to Puerto Viejo de Sarapique Bill mentioned that it was a bit sunny for his taste and suggested it would be nice if we had some clouds to diffuse the light some. Shortly afterward we stopped at a restaurant for lunch/dinner and started photographing some hummingbirds that were visiting the restaurant’s feeders. Within the first few minutes of our visit a huge cloud rolled in making photography all but impossible. We did manage some nice shots but wow was it ever a great opportunity to practice our low-light photography skills. This Coppery-headed Emerald was one of my favorites.
