In an effort to keep things fresh during the “summer doldrums” a friend and I decided to make a trip out to the piney woods of East Texas to photograph the Bachman’s Sparrow, a favorite Texas bird for me. We got out early and it wasn’t too long after reaching the appropriate habitat that we heard one singing. We looked around and saw this beauty perched on top of a burned stump way off in the distance and started heading for a better vantage point. As expected, before we could get close enough for a decent photo the bird hopped down off of his perch and disappeared into the grass. I felt fairly confident that if we quietly waited the bird would return to sing some more. Little did I know that it would be quite a long wait before we got a chance for a photo but thankfully our patience was rewarded by a photo opportunity that was much better than I ever imagined. I had to admit I was starting to have my doubts but ended up thrilled that we made the trip.
