Rhododendrons may bloom in the fall due to a combination of factors, most commonly a plant's stress from drought followed by rainfall, or a warm spell after cool nights, which can trigger a "precocious blooming" event. Also, it is not uncommon, for some spring flowering trees and shrubs, to have a few mature flower buds break their dormancy in the fall. So the bottom line is that the light, moisture and temperatures are all saying “It’s SPRING!” and the plant is opening flowers in response.
