Elk calves experience rapid growth in their first year of life. They gain weight and increase in size significantly during this period. Their diet consists mainly of their mother's milk initially, but they soon start eating grass, leaves, and other vegetation. Calves develop their rumen, a specialized stomach compartment for digesting plant material, as they transition to a herbivorous diet. ~ About Elk Calves
