Neither Rain, nor Wind, nor Snow Keeps the Gulls Away

Campbell River, BC

It was a cold, windy, rainy winter day in Campbell River, but the ever present gulls were still thriving and little effected by the weather. Seagull fossils have been found dating from 30 to 33 million years ago, with their hardiness and survival skills continually developing over the millennia.

One amazing adaptation is that seagulls are one of the few species of seabirds that can survive drinking salt water, enabling them to venture far out to sea in search of food when necessary. This is made possible by a special pair of glands just above the eyes that flush the salt from their system out through their nostrils. ~ All About Birds
