After the fish are lifted from the holding pond, they are sorted and counted. Mature Coho, the ones being sought at this time (run) are counted by the sorters as 'BOY' or 'Girl' at which time one of the team members tabulates the count. Immature Coho are returned to the holding pond by way of a chute (seen behind the sorters on left) to be taken next week. Any off specie (steelhead, chums or other) are returned to the main river through another chute (far right and a Chum is going down) and some special ones are sorted for further research. All the females are tagged with a number and each female egg yield is put into separate tagged containers so when the check for kidney disease is done, all affected female eggs will not be fertilized. Each fish (male or female) is checked for a chip(hatchery fish) or no chip (natural fish) and they also have a DNA test. This is just some of the work done by Dept of Fisheries crew.
