The the Skunk Cabbage's foul odour attracts its pollinators: scavenging flies, stoneflies, and bees.
The odour in the leaves may also help to discourage large animals from disturbing or damaging this plant, which grows in soft wetland soils.
However, bears are one of the few animals that do eat the buds and leaves of Skunk cabbage. They serves a nature's form of Ex-Lax and help get the bear's digestion moving after hibernation.
