One day after the spawn, foam forms on the shore line. Herring eggs are sticky but not all grab onto eel grass, kelp, or rocks a major requirement for a spawn and formation of new herring. Many wash up on the beach, and serve as food for shore birds and ducks, and geese, including the Black Brants that make this a must stop on their way back to the northern nesting grounds. The herring themselves attract eagles, gulls, sea lions, seals, loons, cormorants, and others. Orcas are attracted by the huge presence the sea lions and seal.
