Surfin' Blackbird Style

Saskatchewan, Hwy 625 near Estuary view map

Not the sharpest image I've ever taken but I couldn't resist this one. They were a long way away. I think it's a Cooper's hawk and a blackbird.

What an astonishing shot! I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen this. Great on you for catching such an amazing event.

The hawk was sitting on a fence post beside the road and took flight when I approached. During nesting season, the polygamous male redwing blackbirds can be very aggressive. The hawk probably flew over its nesting area. I've observed this four times in the past week; including a great horned owl sitting on a power pole who was dived upon repeatedly by blackbirds. When the owl took flight they continued until it was well out of range. - Ed

What an incredible capture. Any idea why this happened?
