Thanks Bill and Abs.

@ Rod, in this case, they were set by the person that owned the strobes. They usually use a light meter or camera to come up with a good light reading. Then they post on a piece of paper. I use that as a starting point and adjust accordingly.

This shot they were on the left and right. Right higher. you can see them in his eyes. There was not background. If we shoot with a background, then one is either placed on the right or left and then one is slightly behind the model to illuminate the background and not get shadows.

I typically shoot everything at one setting.

f10
1/100 second
iso 100-400 adjust iso as needed for the lighting condition.

The hand position is so key: It reinforces the main body angles and adds depth--Exceptional in B&W. I might work the eye whites up a bit because of the hat brim shading. Bill

How do you know where to set the strobes Lee, do you just take picys to see if you like the placement? With lights you can just walk around with them until you like the look.

Thanks.

For Rod, this one was shot with two studio strobes.

Great portrait and nicely seen in b&w. The hat really makes this stand out, and the model's eyes have great intensity which I also like. jano

I like this one - great hat (kind of wraps around) and reflection in the eyes

I like this one too Lee - great composition with good use of negative space, and the hat really makes the image for me! :-) CJ
