A matter of taste

I did my first "model" last week with this young man. For me the shoot went very well and this was the best image. But the model was not hapy with the shoot and I doubt he will use any of the images.

What's wrong with this guy? I think he looks approachable, sexy, and cute. IMHO.

K2: Point taken and fixed. I don't know why I didn't tone down the dark wood knot before because it bothered my eye as well.

As to the the model's goal, I can't help anymore here because he told me nothing about what was wrong with the shoot or the pics. And he does not respond to my follow up inquires. Bill

Why does it look like his nipple is glued to the wooden structure behind him? lol
Much too striking - this one needs a retouch, imho. Great image otherwise.

Yes, this is better now. I actually would like some tips on printing of these photos - the contrast being the main issue. You caught this model's eyes really well and I like the composition. Too bad you couldn't talk more about what he was looking for but I'm sure it was a learning experience. Thanks for sharing!

Nice portrait Bill - you did a great job and it's too bad he didn't tell you what it was he didn't like about it. I'm guessing he wanted to look "tougher"? Maybe you could ask if he'd like a reshoot and try to get him to tell you what "image" he was trying to portray. It could be a good learning experience for both of you! :-) CJ

Rod and Jstrong. I toned down the high contrast a bit on the face. I had this set up for printing and the high contrast worked well for the print version. Bill

I like the tone in the image very much. The shadows are wonderful and emphasize his physique to the limit. There is a line across his face (cheek area) which I think should be cloned slightly to not be so definite. I am wondering what the model wanted to portray? Perhaps his right hand should be in here also? I think the arms crossed and flexed in front of his chest might be striking also. I am just really interested in what the model wanted to show in his pics.... I see a great portrait here, but the emotive escapes me. I think the model should emphasize what he wants to portray, i.e., tough, masculine, piercing eye, etc., and then the shoot can be so interesting to try these different poses. I'd say if the model doesn't like them.... then he failed to communicate that through his shoot. You, on the other hand, did a great job here. jano

I suppose they have a certain look they like to project. I think the high contrast across his nose & cheeks might not be working so well here. Good picy anyhow Bill.
