Thanks Bill:-) I held up me hand to crop where you suggest & I really like it. Just the face & hands surrounded by blackness.
Bill Warren01-Jun-2008 17:08
This gets better as I look at it because of the sharp and blur contrast. For me the crop might be tighter on the left to hold more sharpness to the edge of the frame.

Thanks Suey:-) He takes his music very seriously, a bit too much so at times & is just trying to loosen up lately.

This is a good one of Josh - seems intense about it.
Rod 30-May-2008 06:25
Thanks again Kurt:-) I can't believe I'm using such slow speeds wiv this IS thingy, it seems magical.

Another nice shot Rod. I am a big fan of shallow DOF, which you use well here. I agree the focus on the mouth makes for great composition. Although you do a fantastic job with the slowwwww shutter speeds, the motion blurr in the hair (not hands) is distracting a bit. Although both are great pics, the previous seems a bit cleaner and would be my pic of the two.

Thanks Carole:-) I aimed at the cigarette & mouth hoping to get the flame from the lighter too. It seems like I missed the flame but got the intense glow of the fag being lit.
ctfchallenge28-May-2008 15:24
The shallow DOF brings the focus to his mouth and the cigarette which seems to be the important element here. Most portraits have the focus on the eyes but I'm not sure that would work as well for this shot. I like the hand blur too - Good one Rod! :-) CJ

Thanks again Tommy:-) I think the L lenses do get a lot more in focus picys then my other lenses on me 350D but I don't feel as though I know them as well as my old gear so I'm relying on luck to be wiv me when I'm shooting this slow & wide open.
ctfchallenge26-May-2008 21:50
This had such an olde look with what seems like a hand-rolled something. Difficult focusing challenge in such a spontaneous candid. Do the L lenses help? The IS certainly does well for this kind of shot. Well done. -tv

:-)hehe
ctfchallenge25-May-2008 16:04
Ok OK I made a typo - 3 to 6 - Debi
Rod 25-May-2008 09:16
306 fags a day isn't wot I call moderate Debi:-) Wot a woman.
ctfchallenge25-May-2008 08:41
Yea been smoking for 20 years now - still at 3 o 6 a day- Debi
Rod 24-May-2008 21:11
Only kidding Debi, the trick is keeping it in moderation. Not easy.
ctfchallenge24-May-2008 09:04
I dont think its filty - I like it - in moderation though- Debi
Rod 24-May-2008 08:06
Thanks Debi:-) Don't tell me you're a filthy smoker too, me & Aamm have bin trying to quit for ages:-)
ctfchallenge24-May-2008 07:25
I like#2 & 3. The previous one is all soft and contemplative and this one is all hard and edgy - may be because of the intense look - Debi

I would prob vote for this one because he is smoking :P
Rod 24-May-2008 04:36
Thanks Lee & Brent:-) I'm still not as comfortable with the new gear as I was with the 350D & kit lenses but I'm liking the look of the picys with the new lenses & they seem to need a lot less PP.
The 70-200 does seem to be a great lens, the tests seem to say the IS version is sharper even wide open but maybe this only shows up in 100% crops. I didn't miss not having IS at all before but now I have it I would really miss not having it. If you can push the spending up Lee I would recommend the IS version as it seems to get good picys at silly slow shutter speeds. You can't go wrong which ever 70-200 you get as they all seem to be great lenses.
ctfchallenge24-May-2008 02:25
I like this one too, but maybe wish for a little more broad of a focused area- which I know would have been hard with the motion. Still a great image.
Hey Lee, hold off to get the IS version of this lens if you can. I have the non-IS version myself and it is sharp and all- but I often have to put the iso quite high to get the shutter speeds it requires. I may upgrade at some point though you really pay a premium for that IS- don't know why it has to cost so much more.

three well done pictures.

How do you like that lens? I am thinking of getting the non IS version.

Thanks Jano, Troy & Aamm:-)
janewigginsphotography23-May-2008 16:27
I really like all three Rod - good choices for b&w. I think you're going to have more fun and more keepers than you originally perhaps thought. As you continue, you may find even more emotives! jano
