Not HC in my book, quite the contrary, but an excellent flamebait lol

Interesting discussion. This is what makes photography so fun - infinite interpretation. Is this high contrast given the extreme temp change from subject to background - or low contrast given the broad curve of the orange color spectrum represented by the subject?

Penny, I may have a broader definition of high contrast than many here, but I don't think it means the contrast has to be cranked up so much as to make the image appear harsh, whether it's b/w or color. I saw this quote on a photography web site which speaks a bit about high contrast color images.

" With color contrast there are a few differences. The photographer isn’t necessarily looking at light and dark. The entire photo can be equally lit and still have a lot of contrast because a lot of colors have distinct characteristics. Blue and green share similar properties and so they don’t contrast very well, whereas red and green are considered opposites and really jump out against each other. Colors are also described in terms of cool colors and warm colors. In almost all cases a cool color will contrast with a warm one."

Even though black is not considered a "cool" color, most bright or warms colors will appear as high contrast against them and dark colors will appear high contrast against very light or white backgrounds. High contrast images are probably easier to create in black and white, but I wanted to try make high contrast color images. :-D CJ

I am having a real hard time trying to decide what high contrast is. I'm thinking about taking an ugly photo and making it uglier. Is that the idea? But this onion isn't ugly, and I know it's really contrasty because of the color.

I spose the colour of the onion is contrasting wiv the black background. I'm not sure how many of us know wot high contrast is or isnt, I know I don't. High contrast must have a range & this would fall into that range a. Who cares anyhow itsa luvley picy:-)

Thanks all! Rod, this fits my definition of high contrast, but maybe not everyone's! :-D CJ

I like the shine off the side & the texture of the dried portion. Nice black area at bottom of right side, separates onion well.

Very nice CJ, that warm hue looks great against the black. Nice detail too.
