Thank you, Jim, Claire, Oved, and Jano! I also liked the angle of the second link, but I had framed it too close to the head in back. Kept meaning to go back and reshoot, but....

I like all the angles you shot Mary Ann - it is a great array of shadow and light you have studied here. This really stands out in the crowd. Well done! jano

May Anne, I like this very much, though I prefer the angle of the picture at the second URL you posted. /Oved

Thanks for the comments, folks. I don't know whether the difference in tone was caused by the lenses or the day getting darker. The light was from windows on the opposite side of the room, and the clouds and snow were getting heavier by the time I switched to the 50mm. Penny, although I do get to New York on occasion, I'm taking the art classes at a local community college here in Massachusetts. It's a great deal...anyone over the age of 60 can take as many classes as they want for $50 a semester. I've been taking one studio class a semester (photography or art), but this semester I've added an art appreciation course as well. Ahh...retirement is great!

Really good, Mary Anne.

This one is beautiful mary Anne - Its interesting to see the difference in colour with the two lenses or is it because of PP ? - Debi

So, Mary Anne, you mentioned that you are taking art classes and I am noticing how much I am enjoying your photos of late - are your classes in NYC by any chance?
And, this one is particulary nice (you get the shadow on the face which I like) although the composition of 7218 pb.jpg is appealing too. Nice choice of background color.

Ah I get it now of course the kit lens at 50mm would be as you say F5.6. I notice the statue in this picy looks blacker than in the other two taken with the kit lens which helps it to look better. I quite like the composition of the second linked shot. Are these the soap stone statues from Africa? We have two that look quite similar.

Well done Mary Anne. I agree that it's the ideal DOF for this image. As far as the lens choice goes, I too have this lens. It is the best lens for the money available hands down. I think it's sharper at f4 than the kit lens. -COAmature

This one is beautiful, Mary Anne, and the best of the bunch. ~Lydia

If you want to compare, check out these two shots, which were taken with the kit lens:

Rod, you're right about the aperture, but I would have had to shoot at f5.6 in order to use the longer focal length, which I needed in order to bring the back statue forward. The drawback to the 50mm, as you suggested, Brent, is that it doesn't allow you to get very close to the subject. I'll include a link to a couple of similar shots taken with the kit lens. After downloading the shots to the computer, I discovered too much dust on the statues (I'm not much into dusting!), so I wiped them down and switched lenses.

Good point on the aperture I missed there Rod. At f4, Mary Anne must have been quite close to the the focal point to get such a nice blur behind it.

I don't know about proof Brent as Mary Anne could have got just the same picy wiv the 18-55 kit lens as this is done at F4. Being statues & not humans this is nicely on topic Mary Anne, well done.

Very very nice Mary Anne- love your composition. I think there has been some talk in the challenge thread regarding what lenses Debi should get if she gets a dSLR. This image is proof of the value the "nifty fifty" lens has to offer.

Well done image Mary Anne and great exposure! I like the OOF statue in the b/g too for an additional "part" head shot. CJ
